Setting the Scene

Every photo traveller knows the thrill of planning the perfect shot: the location, the angle, the time of day. But what happens when you arrive and the weather isn’t what you expected? Or are you at exactly this spot at a totally different time than you wanted to be? A gloomy, overcast sky replaces the bright, sunny day you envisioned, or perhaps the soft morning light you hoped for is nowhere to be found in the harsh midday sun. It’s a common predicament for those of us who love to capture our travels through the lens. But what if I told you that these unexpected weather conditions could enhance your photography rather than hinder it?

Suppose you have already taken your photo and are interested in what to do next. In this post, we’ll explore together how to transform gloomy travel photos into stunning images using creative techniques and post-processing tools. So, whether you’re a seasoned photographer or a casual traveller with a smartphone, stick around. You might just find that the best travel photos are born from the most unexpected conditions. Never forget that it is your core memory captured in this image. Thus, sometimes, even in ideal weather conditions, the image looks perfect, but others will not see as much in it as you do. On the other hand, it can also happen vice versa, that others love images you do not have these deep feelings about 🙂

At the end of this post, I will share a basic Lightroom preset that I use for my import with sky detection and colour selection, as described later. You can use this preset as a starting point, as the final result depends entirely on your exposure style and your camera’s settings. As I said, use it as a base if you like, customize it, and save it as your import or develop preset in Lightroom. With this Lightroom preset, I encourage you to try one or two techniques from this post and share your results with me on Instagram.

Important note: In my experience, it’s essential to always shoot in RAW, not only based on the weather, when dealing with unexpected conditions during travel. RAW files contain more data, allowing for greater adjustments in post-processing, especially in challenging weather conditions. This provides maximum flexibility to enhance and transform your photos, ensuring you can make the most of the captured memories, regardless of the initial weather challenges.

As a travel photographer, you’re often at the mercy of the elements, which can disrupt even the most meticulously planned photo sessions. However, unexpected weather conditions don’t have to be a setback. In fact, they can provide a unique opportunity to capture compelling images that stand out from the typical postcard shot. This is where the creative potential of bad weather truly shines in photography. 

Overcast skies, for instance, can be a blessing in disguise. The diffused light from a cloudy sky acts as a natural softbox, eliminating harsh shadows and creating a flattering, even light perfect for portrait photography. This soft lighting can also bring out the textures and details in landscapes, making your images more dynamic and engaging. Or you can set the focus by editing highlights and dark shadows by yourself to bring your memory to life. 

When it comes to photography in unexpected weather conditions, it’s essential to adapt your approach and embrace the mood that the weather imparts to your scene. A gloomy day can add drama and emotion to your images that bright sunshine simply can’t. By capturing the essence of the weather rather than fighting against it, you can create beautiful travel photos that tell a more compelling story. 

During my photographic journeys, I’ve encountered diverse weather challenges pushing conventional travel photography’s boundaries. Let’s explore a few remarkable instances where the weather threw unexpected twists into the mix, turning what might seem like obstacles into opportunities.

Arxan-Chaihe Volcanic Field and Wulanhada Volcano Geopark, Inner Mongolia, China: In the vast landscapes of Inner Mongolia, I ventured into the Arxan-Chaihe Volcanic Field and the Wulanhada Volcano Geopark, excited to capture the raw beauty of volcanic terrain. However, nature had its plans, and the weather didn’t play along. Instead of clear skies, I encountered moments of overcast weather and intermittent rain. While this might deter some photographers, I embraced the changing conditions, discovering that the diffused light added a unique mood to the volcanic landscapes. The clouds accentuated the textures and colours, turning the challenge of unpredictable weather into an opportunity for creating atmospheric and dramatic compositions. 

With my sky edit trick from the “Advanced Editing Techniques” section of this post, I have greatly changed the overall image by using my slightly underexposed shots. This is the significant benefit of the cloudy sky as I have all the options with the uniform light on the volcano and the grasslands.

Beijing’s Air Quality Challenge: In bustling Beijing, where air quality is often a concern, I faced the difficulty of capturing clear, vibrant images. The thick haze posed a challenge but also presented an opportunity to experiment with atmospheric effects. Sometimes, the pollution-laden air created a mystique, lending an unexpected cinematic quality to urban scenes. Embracing the less-than-ideal conditions, I found that adjusting my photography approach to incorporate the haze could produce compelling and thought-provoking images.

Nanjing: Similar situations as in Bejing are sometimes present in Nanjing, where it can create a stunning effect and help to create mesmerising moods and dazzling sun rays through the ‘mist’.

Harbin in Winter Wonderland: Harbin, known for its bitterly cold winters, provided another set of challenges. The sub-zero temperatures and icy landscapes demanded careful camera settings and gear consideration. Yet, the winter wonderland that unfolded before me was worth the effort. The pristine white snow, frozen waterways, and unique architecture transformed Harbin into a surreal setting. Here, I learned that extreme weather conditions, far from hindering photography, could enhance the visual narrative, telling a story of resilience and beauty in the face of winter’s harsh embrace.

Namtso Lake: My journey through Tibet blessed me with splendid spring weather, but fate had a surprise in store on my last day at Namtso Lake, or as locals call it, the “Heavenly Lake.” Instead of the pristine blue waters, I’d hoped for, the sky was draped in overcast clouds. A twist of fate, challenging my carefully laid plans. Yet, this unexpected weather painted a different charm on Namtso Lake. Armed with my advanced editing tricks from below, I transformed the even-toned captures into fascinating photos, proving that beauty can emerge, even when nature decides to improvise.

Rainy Iceland: During my travels in Iceland, I experienced 12 hours of ever-changing weather, transitioning from rain to sun. This dynamic weather led to the creation of stunning light and shadow scenes, as well as the appearance of beautiful rainbows. However, following this brief period of favourable conditions, the weather took a turn for the worse, making it challenging to venture outside. The rest of the week presented difficulties, and I could only capture a few images. I have curated a collection of examples featuring images before and after my editing process to illustrate the transformative impact of post-processing techniques on capturing the essence of these unpredictable weather conditions.

These real-life experiences illustrate the transformative power of adapting to weather challenges, turning what could be perceived as obstacles into opportunities for creative expression. These challenging conditions also challenge your post-editing skills. Further note: Moreover, non-ideal weather conditions often lead to fewer tourists and clearer spaces, allowing you to capture landmarks and scenery without the usual crowds. This can result in more authentic and serene representations of your travel destinations. 

Intentionally overexposing the sky can dramatically affect your images, particularly in challenging weather conditions. It can help wash out the grey, rainy sky, adding a unique and compelling element to your photos. While it’s generally advised not to overexpose, experimenting with this technique can lead to striking results, especially when looking to add a sense of drama to your compositions. However, it’s important to remember that modern cameras make it easier to recover details from slightly underexposed areas in post-processing.

Mastering Lightroom: Color and Mood Adjustments

Adobe Lightroom Classic is a powerful tool for photographers, offering a range of features that can help you transform your travel photos, especially when dealing with unexpected weather conditions. There are several other options outside, and I tried a few, but in the end, I ended up again in Lightroom. I have to say, I am not a fan of this monthly subscription model, but in the end, I am getting all new tools by paying my monthly bill. 

Budget tip: Buy one or more of the Adobe annual subscriptions you need during sales, like Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day, or Double 11. You can combine them to have peace of mind for a few years if there’s a good deal. 🙂

One of the primary features of any RAW editor, such as Lightroom, that contributes to its versatility is its ability to adjust colours and mood, enabling you to realize its creative vision. This capability is particularly valuable for enhancing travel photos in unfavourable weather conditions. The basic tips for post-processing travel photos with Lightroom Classic include adjusting white and black levels, cropping and aligning, and exporting photos in JPEG format. Additionally, editing travel photos involves various techniques, such as sharpening, and adjusting colour tones, to improve the overall quality of the images. When starting the editing process, it is recommended to have a rough result in mind, shoot with intention, and then apply post-processing techniques to achieve the desired outcome.

• Adjusting White Balance: The white balance tool can help correct colour casts caused by different light sources. For instance, an overcast sky can often make your photos look cool and blue. By adjusting the white balance, you can warm up your images, making them look more like how you remember the scene.
• Playing with Saturation and Vibrance: These tools can help enhance the colours in your image. Saturation affects all colours equally, while vibrance is more subtle and affects the less saturated colours more. This can be particularly useful in gloomy weather to bring out the colours in your scene.
• Using the Tone Curve: The tone curve is a powerful tool that can help you adjust the brightness and contrast of your image. By creating an ‘S’ curve, you can increase the contrast of your image, making it look more dynamic. Changing the colour curves is very powerful for the results of the edited image, but this quickly goes beyond the basic developing adjustments. 
• Selective Adjustments: Lightroom Classic allows you to adjust specific parts of your image selectively. This can be particularly useful when you want to draw attention to a particular area of your image or adjust the exposure of the sky without affecting the rest of your image. The new local adjustment tools in Lightroom Classic, such as the Select Sky tool, provide even more precise control over sky adjustments. Try to add some slight colour adjustments to the sky, as well as to the rest of the image.
• Applying Filters: Graduated and radial filters can be used to apply adjustments to specific areas of your image. For instance, you can use a graduated filter to darken the sky, adding more drama to your image.

When it comes to adjusting the sky in your photos, Lightroom Classic offers a range of tools to help you achieve the desired effect. You can use the selective adjustments feature to specifically target the sky, allowing you to make precise changes without affecting the rest of your image. Additionally, the invert mask function enables you to refine your adjustments further, ensuring that the changes are applied exactly where needed. Furthermore, Lightroom Classic can change the hue and brightness of individual colours in the sky, allowing for a more customized and creative approach to sky adjustments. Combining these colour adjustments with the colour tone curves allows you to harmoniously and seamlessly integrate the sky into your overall composition.

While Lightroom Classic offers powerful tools for sky adjustments, it’s important to note that the software does not have a dedicated sky replacement feature. Other specialized tools and software, such as Photoshop’s Sky Replacement feature or dedicated AI sky replacement tools, may be considered for more advanced sky replacement capabilities. By leveraging these features in Lightroom Classic and exploring specialized tools where necessary, you can effectively enhance the sky in your photos, whether it’s to add drama, change the colour, or achieve a specific mood, all while maintaining the authenticity of your captured memories.

I encourage you to try out any idea or any kind of tool you want and to repeat the basic steps over and over again. With more tools in LR 13.1 and further versions, your skills will improve and become more advanced. There is no right or wrong, only strong tools to enhance your creativity. From time to time, you will use one tool or another, and at some point, you will probably stop using some of them, but that’s the fun of the process and learning. 

Towards the end of this post, I’ll provide a basic Lightroom preset I use during import, incorporating sky detection and colour selection, as described in this post.

In the next section, I will share more advanced editing tips I used and developed while planning and preparing this post. I also learned a lot in the process, but these tips are not a must but rather an option that you can implement or give a try.

Play with the sliders for shadows, highlights and white and add some colour accents and enrich details.

AI Filtering Technique: Unleashing the Power of Artificial Intelligence

In the evolving landscape of photography, artificial intelligence (AI) is a game-changer. Leverage AI filtering techniques to intelligently identify and enhance objects, backgrounds, and skies in your travel photos. With advancements like those found in Adobe Lightroom Classic 13.1, you can achieve precision and efficiency in your selection of masks. Combined with linear filters, you can create seamless transitions between edited and unedited areas. Colour Selection Mask Tool: Painting the Skies in Vibrant Hues

When faced with a greyish sky, the colour selection mask tool becomes your ally. In Adobe Lightroom Classic 13.1, this tool enables you to target specific colours, making it an excellent choice for transforming dull skies into vibrant masterpieces. Select a colour in the greyish sky, reduce the selection to a low value, and apply edits to breathe life into your captures. Combine this with dodge and burn using radial and linear filters for a harmonious blend of artistry and realism. (Settings around 1 of the colour selector can create some sort of artefacts in your post-processed images. Therefore, I recommend going not lower than 3 to 5 in the first step)

I only developed this sky enhancement method while planning this blog post. And it perhaps goes a little beyond the normal developing and altering of raw files that I usually publish. But I find it fascinating how much you can change a flatly lit image if you spend a little more time in Lightroom with this technique.

In a nutshell, mastering travel photo post-processing requires continuous exploration of techniques that push creative boundaries. Make sure your edits are purposeful and in keeping with the unique stories captured in each image. While AI tools in Lightroom Classic do not offer the option of sky swapping (yet), it’s a feature that stirs debate within the photography community. Sky swapping allows you to replace the existing sky with a more visually appealing one, altering the atmosphere of the original scene. As a photographer, it’s important to weigh the artistic benefits against the potential loss of authenticity. Be careful and consider the concerns involved before resorting to sky-swapping to preserve the essence of the captured moment.

Ethical Considerations: Balancing Enhancement and Authenticity

While embracing the benefits of AI, it’s crucial to maintain a balance between enhancement and authenticity. When using features such as automatic detection of the sky and noise reduction at high ISO values, I believe that this is state-of-the-art today, and I use them without any indication. I believe that if elements are swapped out, the sky is replaced, new elements are added to the scene, or the overall integrity of the original scene is not maintained, disclosure of this significant change supported by AI should be mentioned. In this way, a photographer can establish the credibility of their creative process.
